The Penang Butterfly Farm the first tropical butterfly farm ever set up in the tropical world and is located in Teluk Bahang, which is at the end of the tourist hotel strip at Batu Ferringhi and is about 17km from George Town. The Farm was established in 1986 by Mr. David Goh. Since then the farm has slowly been expanded. In Penang, the farm has now become a house hold name and a must to see for visitors. it has become one of the popular stops on Penang's round island tour. . To go there, you could either take a bus, a taxi or drive yourself. Parking is FREE so you can spend as much time as you like.
According to lots of reports. The Penang Butterfly Farm is more than just a tourist attraction. It is a research centre to develop breeding method. It has an average flying population of 4000 Malaysian butterflies of 120 different species, including the rare Indian Leafl (Kallima paralekta) and the endangered Yellow Bird wing (Troides helena). Probably the most famous of Malaysian butterflies is the Rajah Brooke's Bird wing of the Papilionidae family.
In the farm, there is a museum for educational experience where specimens of the various life cycle of the butterfly are available for your viewing. You can also find various type of butterflies from around the world are shown in there.
There is a souvenirs shop on your way out, but not much on refreshment, so do feel free to bring your own bottle of water as it can be humid. Overall, the farm would be a nice day out for all ages, ex specially kids. More >>
